Boarding School Ancillary Staff Assaulted by Teacher Under the Influence of Alcohol

In a disturbing tun of events, a prominent boarding school is under the spotlight again following an alleged breach of civil service policy.
The latest incident allegedly involves the consumption of kava and alcohol within the school premises, and the assault of an ancillary staff by a teacher.
The alleged incident has prompted yet another reminder from the Ministry of Civil Service permanent secretary; Parmesh Chand, that those found guilty through due process, would be dealt with appropriate disciplinary measures.

Mr Chand made it clear last night there was a circular instruction in place forbidding more than 35,000 civil servants from 26 ministries on consumption of kava and liquor during working hours in government premises or offices except for ceremonial purposes, with the prior approval of the PS concerned.
Assault
The Ministry of Education’s permanent secretary, Selina Kuruleca, yesterday confirmed the alleged incident had been reported to them and they were conducting an investigation.
“We are waiting for the verified reports of the incident that took place before we take the necessary disciplinary action on the staff involved,” Ms Kuruleca said.
“I was made aware the incident happened during the farewell of the school’s VP, but we are waiting upon the report from the divisional education officer to verify the report, then we will take action.
“Once we receive the report, I will send an investigation panel to conduct an inquiry on the people involved.”
The school’s principal also confirmed the alleged incident, and the ministry handling the case.
Meanwhile, the Fiji Teachers Union (FTU) general secretary, Muniappa Goundar, has questioned the integrity of teachers found under the influence of alcohol within the school premises, emphasising the importance of maintain respect among colleagues at all times.
