New Year’s Eve turned tragic for the family of six-year-old Aahil Hussein, who drowned in a flooded culvert at Togomasi in Nadi around midday on Saturday.

Police Spokesperson Constable Wame Bautolu said the boy tried to cross a flooded culvert with his 60-year-old grandmother, Maya Wati when he was swept away by the strong current.

“They rushed him to hospital but it was too late,” Mr Bautolu said.

Ms Wati said her grandson wanted to go with her as he wanted to watch the group of boys playing on the flooded waters.

“I was going to take the grog for pounding at a place nearby when my grandson urged me to go with me,” she said.
