Minister for Housing and Local government, Maciu Nalumisa officially opened the new $1.98 million Nakasi market yesterday that will accommodate 100 vendors.

“The Nakasi Market stands as a testament to the Coalition Government’s commitment to our National Development Plan, which is centered on empowering the people of Fiji through unity,” he said.

“For years, many of our vendors operated in challenging environments along the Nasinu and Nausori corridors. Now they step into a new, clean and secure market that restores pride to their livelihoods and offers them a dignified space to grow their businesses.”

Mr Nalumisa said the new market is a symbol of opportunity and empowerment for the vendors.

“This is not just commerce, it is about empowering individuals and communities,” he said.

“Our investment of $1.98 million in this facility is not just financial. It is an investment in human potential, an investment in the future of Nakasi, Nausori and Fiji.”

Nalumisa said the new market facility offers restroom facilities for the vendors and parking for the customers.

“It is a necessity for a growing urban area like Nakasi,” he said.

“This milestone is a result of collaboration between the Nausori Town Council, Government and the Fiji Corrections Service who donated the land for this project.”

Nalumisa said government is committed to ensure that necessary laws and regulations are in place in municipal markets across Fiji.

“We are enhancing transparency, accountability and efficiency in the management of all municipal markets with the new market regulations,” he said.

“We are creating environments where businesses can thrive and where vendors can operate with dignity and security. The Nakasi Market is essential in ensuring food security, generating local government revenue and fostering community vitality.”
