Brothers Lose Widowed Mum, In Alleged Stove Explosion

Two brothers residing in Buabua, Lautoka are now mourning the death of their mother, Shashi Mani who died as a result of a burning incident at their home on Thursday.

Police Spokesperson, Savaira Tabua, in a statement said Ms Mani, 47 sustained 70 per cent burns. Police says the alleged inci­dent occurred when the kerosene stove she was cooking on, exploded.

Ms Mani, who passed away on Saturday morning, was a widow after she lost her husband in June this year.

Her eldest son, Navneet Mani said he would now play the role of a mother and father to his younger brother, Ashish.

He described his mother as a gentle and soft-spoken person who showed endless love and care for the family.

The 24-year-old, who lost his job due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is now depending on the family’s sugarcane and vegetable farm to earn cash to support him and his brother.

“At the moment we are farming, both sug­arcane and vegetable and will depend on this to support ourselves,” he said.

The family will wait on the outcome of the postmortem results to decide on funeral ar­rangements for the late Ms Mani.
