A village with about 200 people and 52 houses in Labasa will now be able to keep their surroundings clean.

Vuo Villagers received brushcutters from the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh.

Vuo Village headman Semi Goletoka said he was grateful to Mr Singh for choosing his village among the 21 villages in his donation list.

“Some of the households in the village didn’t have a brushcutter and sometimes it is very difficult to clean our compounds,” Mr Goletoka said.

“Only a few families afford to have brushcutters and not every time they are available to help those in need.”

He said many of their breadwinners were fishermen because they lived near the sea.

“With this kind of assistance we will be able to help the villagers, even those with very big compounds. It will help reduce sicknesses such as leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue fever and diarrhoea.

“Many women who are involved in compound cleaning said the brushcutter was like a Mother’s Day gift to them.”

Mr Singh, being from Labasa, is no stranger to village lifestyles. He said it was always difficult to maintain and clean big compounds.

“I have donated many brushcutters before becoming a minister and I want to continue with this programme,” Mr Singh said.

“I believe that through this assistance, some form of relief would be given to them.”
