A shift is quietly unfolding in Bua Province indicating hope, accountability and the impact of community-driven rehabilitation.

Latest figures from the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) reveal that inmate numbers from Bua have dropped, with 38 cases recorded so far in 2024, down from 33 in 2025.

The FCS is yet to confirm the figures for 2026. This information was revealed during the weeklong Yellow Ribbon Initiative held at Nabouwalu Village yesterday.

Fiji has recorded a total of 1287 inmates, with Bua contributing a small portion.

Nature of offences

Of concern, however, is the nature of offences recorded in the province.

Manager legal and Assistant Superintendent Corrections Samisoni Naba stated that sexual offences make up the largest share, with 21 cases out of the 38 inmates recorded in 2024.

“Other offences include crimes against property and related violations,” Mr Naba said.

The FCS encourages communities to play a direct role in rehabilitation, promoting acceptance of former offenders and reducing stigma.

Events planned throughout the week in Nabouwalu include awareness campaigns, community engagement, and a Yellow Ribbon Walk.

They are aimed at uniting people behind the message of second chances. For Bua, the slight drop in inmate numbers may be an early sign that these efforts are beginning to work.

But, officials said the real success will depend on continued support from families, villages, and communities, ensuring that those who leave prison do not return, but instead rebuild their lives with purpose.
