At a young age Jay Kumar had a vision to do something for the country and yesterday it was a milestone for his sawmill as the Minister for Forests Osea Naiqamu officially opened a nursery at Jaydil Sawmill.

The 37-year-old from Cubue Village, in Bua, was a farmer when he decided to open his sawmill.

“I started from the ground level and it wasn’t easy. I took a loan in 2013 and we have grown ever since,” the father-of- five said.

“I faced many challenges on the way, but with the assistance of the Ministry of Forestry I was able to reach this far.

“I plan to extend my business and opening the nursery is just the start. It is a pleasure that the minister was able to be here today to officially open the nursery.”

Minister for Forests Osea Naiqama said the opening of the nursery was a commitment while the investment was a testimony of excellent leadership and vision shown by owners of the company.

“This achievement is a positive signal of the company’s commitment towards the sustainable management of our forests,” Mr Naiqamu said.

It contributes to Fiji’s commitment to deliver its international obligations, especially under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

“I believe this is the first in Vanua Levu for a logger and saw miller to construct and manage his own nursery to supply seedlings to support the reforestation efforts on this island.”
