“When the weather is bad, the students from Waibasaga will wait until the water goes down then they will cross. And we do not want that because it is risky for these students,” Mr Seru said.

Build us a bridge!

That's the heartfelt plea from teachers and parents of students and villagers of Muaira District School, in the interior of Naitasiri.

While many children in towns and cities enjoy the leisure of travelling by bus or car to school, more than a hundred students in the interior of Naitasiri are crossing rivers to reach school.

The headteacher of Muaira District School, Jope Lalaga Seru, in Lutu Village, Wainimala, Naitasiri, is hoping that a bridge will be built at Botenaulu and Waibasaga Villages in Wainimala, Naitasiri.

This is not a new problem, but rather an old one, which Mr Seru hopes will be addressed for the safety of the students.

He plans to raise this issue during the Naitasiri Provincial Council meeting, scheduled at the end of this month.

“When the weather is bad, the students from Waibasaga will wait until the water goes down then they will cross. And we do not want that because it is risky for these students,” Mr Seru said.

“There are 45 students from Botenaulu Village and 78 students from Waibasaga Village who attend Muaira District School. 188 students attend this school.
