Two bus drivers have gone the extra mile help patch a pot hole, providing a smoother travelling experience for passengers and buses.

Kinijoji Malailevu and Kaliova Tanene, drivers of Allied Buses in Ba, operate the route transporting passengers from Balevuto and Toge Village to Ba Town.

While transporting passengers on Christmas Eve, the pair encountered a pothole on a small bridge that affected the bus and caused discomfort for passengers.

The experience prompted them to take action the following day, despite it being Christmas Day.

“It is a small bridge, and only small vehicles can avoid the hole, but a bus cannot,” Mr Malailevu said.

“We have to go very slowly, and the hole causes an imbalance. On Christmas Eve night, we planned with another bus driver to bring stones to fill the hole and level it.”

He said Christmas Day was spent fixing the road rather than celebrating.

“Yesterday, I wasn’t focused on Christmas celebrations. I was focused on making sure the road was fixed before Saturday.

“We didn’t want to call Fiji Roads. They have already done a lot on our roads. Without complaining to authorities, we chose to sacrifice our time for the safety of our passengers.”

Mr Malailevu said only one bus operates on that route, making it critical that nothing disrupts the service.

“I always think about the bus and make sure it is well taken care of so nothing stops its operation,” he added.
