Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) chief executive officer Joel Abraham will meet bus owners today to hear their call for an increase of up to 47 per cent in bus fares across the country.

In their submission in August last year, the Fiji Bus Operators Association (FBOA) no longer wished to be burdened by the costs of subsidised bus fares for students, the elderly and persons with disabilities.

Mr Abraham, who is also chairperson of the Independent Bus Fare Review Committee, will meet bus owners after considering the merits of their submission.

“Thousands of workers and students rely on bus services every day for cost effective travel to their workplaces and schools.

“I have a duty to ensure that any increase in prices are fair to Fijians and bus owners,” said Mr Abraham.
