At this stage, an increase in bus fares is forecasted; however, the FCCC is in discussion with the Government to look at subsidy mechanisms so that we are able to provide some relief to consumers,” Mr Abraham said.

Consumers can expect to see an increase in bus fares soon.

This is the message from the Fijian Competition Commission’s (FCCC) chief executive officer, Joel Abraham.

The commission and Government will discuss implementing subsidy mechanisms to increase bus fares while ensuring commercially feasible fares for bus operators.

He clarified the issue is currently being discussed following submissions from bus operators.

“At this stage, an increase in bus fares is forecasted; however, the FCCC is in discussion with the Government to look at subsidy mechanisms so that we are able to provide some relief to consumers,” Mr Abraham said.

He said this aims to alleviate some of the burden on consumers while also ensuring that bus operators can maintain financially sustainable fares, as setting prices too low could pose challenges.

Mr Abraham expressed the commission remained worried about some bus operators who were still receiving cash payments for fares.

“Now that person went and posted this, our monitoring team picked it up.

We want to know why bus drivers are still accepting cash when it is illegal to do so,” Mr Abraham questioned.

Consumers need to understand that paying cash decreases revenue for the bus company, leading to higher revenue requirements to recoup investments

He said cash payments for bus fares could potentially increase long-term fares as the money goes into the black market.
