Meri Qiolevu, a 39-year-old mother to four boys, faced a challenge that would test her strength and resilience.

Hailing from Nawaka village in Nadi and with maternal links to Nadrau, Nadroga, Meri’s life took an unexpected turn when she discovered a lump in her left breast.

As soon as Meri felt the lump, she didn’t hesitate. She reached out to the Fiji Cancer Society, marking the beginning of a journey that would encompass hope, determination, and community’s support.

“From there, I had continuous tests and clinics at the oncology unit which later resulted in a diagnosis of breast cancer.

She said after the constant pains in her shoulders and back, she made up her mind that she was going to fight this battle.

“My choice was clear, and I opted for surgery as the means to confront my condition head-on. I chose the path of medical intervention, rejecting alternative remedies that some of my relatives suggested. It was a difficult choice, but I had to act wisely, for my boys.”

On the 11th of October, 2021, Meri underwent her surgery, and the it was a success. She said this was the biggest miracle and testimony in her life.

Meri’s message to all Fijian women is to never be afraid to visit the hospital when you find an abnormality.

“Especially to all the mothers - let’s start prioritising our health and praise God every single day for his love and mercy.”
