A40-year-old sugarcane farmer at Wailevu in Labasa has resorted to selling vegetables for a living.
Hemendra Prasad said he was not happy with the cane price this season therefore he needed to find an alternative to be able to support his family.
He normally produces 300-350 tonnes of cane.

“I have increased my vegetable production from previous years because the money that I will receive from my cane sales would definitely be less than previous cane payments,” he said.
The father-of-three children is the sole breadwinner of the family and earns between $50-$60 per week from his vegetable sales.
“I sell cabbage, long bean, cucumber, tomato and chilies and this way I am able to make money daily as this type of vegetables are on high demand”.
Mr Prasad said he would continue to harvest cane this year but would also integrate vegetable farming to keep his finances viable.
