Captain Balekana fueled by her dreams
Captain Balekana’s return to Fiji and her role as Chief Officer aboard MV Westerland and MV Suilven in 2012 underscored the delicate harmony between pursuing one’s passion and cherishing family bonds.

Captain Susana Senikake Balekana, affectionately known as Captain Sue, grew up in the humble and nurturing surroundings of the picturesque Island of Kadavu.
Her upbringing was steeped in a deep-rooted sense of family values, with her late father, Panapasa Balekana, having been a respected education officer within the Ministry of Education. Arieta Balekana, her mother, was the steadfast pillar of support and care, ensuring the family was always nurtured and well taken care of.
In this closely-knit family, Captain Sue had the joy of growing up alongside three sisters and a brother. The Balekana household was one brimming with love, encouragement, and dedication to each child’s success in their future endeavors. Her parents worked tirelessly to provide ample support and love, shaping a nurturing environment that would guide their children towards prosperous and fulfilling careers.

Captain Balekana’s passion for the sea began to blossom during her early years on the island. She was captivated by the vast expanse of the ocean that surrounded Kadavu and the adventures it held. As she grew older, her fascination with maritime life deepened. She dreamt of sailing across the open waters, exploring the world, and living a life imbued with the rhythm of the sea.
“My journey to turn my dreams into reality commenced when I enrolled at Ratu Nacagilevu Primary School, followed by Levuka Fijian School due to my father being a primary school teacher at the time,” she shared.
“I attended Richmond Methodist High School, Vunisea Secondary School, and later Lelean Memorial School when my father transitioned to a new role as an education officer.”
In 1997, Captain Balekana embarked on her maritime journey by joining the former School of Maritime Studies (which is now known as the Fiji Maritime Academy) as a Stage 1 Cadet.
This marked the inception of an arduous yet rewarding journey through stages 1 to 5, culminating in her graduation with a Certificate in Deck Apprentice in 2002.
“Studying at the Fiji National University (FNU) has broadened my knowledge as I was taught by lecturers who were highly experienced. I enjoyed my studies and practicals, even though at times I faced challenges, as would any other studemt.”
Undeterred by challenges and fueled by her dreams, she pursued further education and attained a Diploma in Nautical Science and Ship Operations in 2006.
Career
Captain Balekana then embarked on a 27-year-long journey on the seas. She pursued her dream tirelessly, rising through the ranks until she achieved the prestigious position of captain on a ship.
“I began serving my time as a cadet on local vessels such as the MV Teamauri and others before I completed my cadetship in Papua New Guinea,” she shared.
“It was through these experiences that I honed my skills, laying the foundation for an impressive future in the maritime industry.”
Following her cadetship, Captain Balekana’s commitment to her craft propelled her to become a full-time employee with Islands Salvage & Towage Limited in Papua New Guinea.
In 2006, Captain Susana Senikake Balekana took a significant stride in her maritime career, upgrading her training through the Fiji Maritime Academy.
Undertaking a Certificate in Deck Apprentice and Diplomas in Nautical Science (Watch Keeper) and Ship Operations, she displayed a profound commitment to mastering her craft and advancing her knowledge in the maritime domain.
Her dedicated journey didn’t stop there. While being employed with Islands Salvage and Towage Limited, Captain Balekana accomplished a remarkable milestone as she assumed her first command as a Master, a momentous step that opened doors for her to navigate international waters.
With this promotion, she began to traverse seas beyond her local roots, showcasing her expertise and pioneering spirit on a global scale.
“As a Master, my work included the transportation of cargo, and it felt like I was a manager, responsible for overseeing a crew and ensuring the safety of both the crew and the cargo,” she said.
“This pivotal juncture demanded keen managerial skills, where precision and foresight were essential to navigate the vast, open waters and deliver precious cargo to its destination safely and on time.”
Captain Balekana’s return to Fiji and her role as Chief Officer aboard MV Westerland and MV Suilven in 2012 underscored the delicate harmony between pursuing one’s passion and cherishing family bonds.
“In 2012 I returned to Fiji and joined the esteemed Bligh Water Shipping company, where I assumed the role of Chief Officer aboard the MV Westerland and MV Sulliven. This was an exciting time for me as I was able to continue in my passion of sailing and at the same time be close to my family”.
Words of Wisdom
As Captain Balekana continues to chart new courses and make waves in the maritime world, she stands as a beacon of hope for others, proving that dreams, when pursued with determination, can indeed set sail on the vast sea of possibilities.
Today, Captain Balekana gives back to the maritime community by being part of the FMA Alumni committee, through which she hopes her contributions will help the Academy with its objectives. She returns to the sea at the beginning of October to resume her role with Genesi Shipping for a delivery voyage.
“I look forward to returning to the ocean. My heart is where the ocean is,” she said.
“I urge others to pursue your dreams relentlessly and never doubt your ability to turn your dreams into reality.”
