Our Fishery, Our Future.

Many gathered yesterday to celebrate the importance and impacts of fisheries and ocean life at Ratu Sukuna Park in Suva yesterday.

Permanent Secretary for Fisheries, Pene Baleinabuli, highlighted the need to care for the ocean for the sake and livelihood of the future generations.

“Fisheries has contributed to our socio-economic development and we need to look at how it has helped nations to become wealthy and prosperous,” he said.

“The language around the world right now is about sustainable management of fisheries resources.

“While we need to harvest and meet our food security needs and grow our economy, we must also be mindful of the need to sustain our resources so that it can be useful to the future generation.”

He added that yesterday was a day to acknowledge fisheries and the resources we get and how it has sustained our people and our livelihoods.
