A caretaker helped tenants escape a massive commercial property fire in Samabula on Monday night as flames destroyed the building and displaced occupants.

The fire broke out at about 8.30pm at the Memon Investment property along Kaka Street, where six adults were occupying the premises at the time.

Quick action by tenants and caretaker Naikasio Uduvakavo ensured everyone escaped safely before the blaze rapidly engulfed the building.

Mr Uduvakavo said he heard screams for help coming from one of the tenants’ rooms and immediately rushed to assist.

“It was my first time experiencing something like this and I did not know how to react,” he said.

“The only thing I could do was make sure the tenants were safe. I didn’t even have time to think or process what was happening.”

He described the incident as “a nightmare”, adding that the tenants remained in shock after the ordeal.

The National Fire Authority said the emergency call was received at 9.06pm, prompting firefighters from Suva Fire Station to respond immediately.

Fire appliances F77 and F9 arrived at the scene within five minutes.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the large commercial property fully engulfed in flames.

The structure reportedly housed offices, rental car operations and spare parts storage.

Additional support from Valelevu Fire Station was deployed to prevent nearby properties from catching fire as crews battled the blaze.

According to the National Fire Authority, the building measured about 40 metres by 28 metres and sustained 100 per cent damage, with estimated losses reaching around $400,000.

National Fire Authority chief executive officer Puamau Sowane expressed concern over the growing number of structural fires around the country.

“The increasing number of structural fires is alarming and serves as a reminder for families and business operators to take fire safety seriously at all times,” Mr Sowane said.

“Fortunately, no lives were lost in this incident because occupants were able to evacuate quickly. This highlights the importance of having an escape plan and ensuring everyone knows what to do during a fire emergency.”

Mr Sowane urged homeowners, tenants and business operators to regularly inspect electrical wiring, avoid overloading power outlets and ensure exits remained clear at all times.

Police and National Fire Authority investigators remain at the scene as investigations into the cause of the fire continue.
