Cattle health is under the spotlight as the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways launches a crucial Brucellosis and Tuberculosis Eradication Campaign (BTEC), aiming to protect both livestock and public health.
Brucellosis and Tuberculosis affect cattle and have serious implications for both animal and public health.
Apart from safeguarding livestock health and ensuring the safety of agricultural products, the BTEC campaign is a crucial initiative.

A dedicated team of four officers from the Animal Health and Production Division has been conducting tests on cattle on farms located in the Navosa region and the highlands of Nadi.
These tests are essential for determining the farm’s status regarding Brucellosis and Tuberculosis, both of which can affect cattle.
Agriculture Minister Vatimi Rayalu said the ongoing efforts underscore the ministry’s commitment to promoting sustainable livestock farming practices and protecting the agricultural sector from the impact of these diseases.
“The results from the testing will provide vital information to the farm management and help inform future actions to ensure the health of the cattle and the safety of the food supply,” he said.
“The BTEC initiative will not only eliminate these diseases, but also educate farmers about best practices in animal husbandry to prevent the spread of infections.”
The BTEC team will continue to carry out tests on farms across Fiji, and interested farmers are encouraged to contact their nearest agriculture station for more information and advice.
