The post-mortem of the farmer who died while allegedly being held in custody at the Savusavu Police Station, was conducted on Thursday.

Marika Radua of Naviavia Village in Cakaudrove died on Tuesday after allegedly been assaulted by a prisoner in the cell block.

Divisional Police Commander (DPC) North, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kemueli Baledrokadroka said a team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has started an investigation.

“Once CID officers complete their work, then we will be issuing another statement,” SSP Baledrokadroka said.

The first statement released by the Fiji Police Force on Wednesday said the Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew had directed officers from the CID Headquarters to investigate the incident.

The statement said Police officers rushed the victim to the Savusavu Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Naviavia Village advisory councillor Marika Sade said Mr Radua was arrested on Tuesday about 6am from the village after he set a family house on fire around 3am.

“The deceased’s mother is in trauma since she lost the house and her son on the same week,” Mr Sade said.

She is being accommodated at a relative’s house away from the village.
