Chance Of Tropical Cyclone On Sunday

A low pressure system is expected to develop over waters between Fiji and Vanuatu around Sunday.
Acting Director of Meteorology Terry Atalifo revealed yesterday that an adverse weather condition continues to affect the Fiji Group.
“The chances of this low-pressure system further developing into a tropical cyclone on Sunday are moderate,” he said.

He added that the Fiji Meteorological Service would continue to monitor this weather event and update warnings and forecasts accordingly.
Furthermore, Mr Atalifo added that a weak trough of low pressure lies over the eastern parts of Fiji.
“Another active trough of low pressure lies to the northeast of the group is expected to drift southwest and affect the northern and eastern parts of the country from Tuesday night,” he said yesterday.
Hence, the following alert and warnings are currently in force.
A heavy rain alert is now in force for Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Lau and Lomaiviti Group.
A strong wind warning remains in force for the land areas of Lau Group.
A strong wind warning remains in force for Lau Waters and Northern Vanua Levu Waters.
Expect occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms over Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Lau and Lomaiviti Group.
Showers increasing to rain from tonight.
Cloud and showers and possible thunderstorms over the rest of the Fiji group especially in the afternoon or evening.
Showers gradually increasing to rain from later Wednesday.
These anticipated weather conditions may cause:
- Risk of flash flooding of low lying and flood prone areas during persistent localised heavy falls.
- Risk of lightning strikes during thunderstorms.
- Risk of flooding of small rivers, creeks, and crossings.
- Risk of landslides with continuous rainfall over prolonged durations.
- Poor visibility on roads in areas of heavy rain for motorists.
- Reduced visibility at sea.
