Sheron Chand stands today as a proud Fijian.

She is believed to be the first Indo-Fijian soldier from Labasa to graduate with Advanced Individual Training (AIT) in finance management technician from Fort Jackson South Carolina, United States Military.

The 32-year-old, originally from Valebasoga, completed 10 weeks of basic combat training from Fort Jackson South Carolina after migrating to California in 2019. She then finished eight weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT) for cargo specialists at Fort Eustis, Virginia. She worked for three years at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

The oldest of two siblings decided to upgrade her qualification recently as she holds a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Accounting and Economics from the University of the South Pacific.

Moreover, she holds seven years of experience in finance as she worked at Home Finance Company (HFC) Bank.

Now she will leave for New York to start her duty as a finance management technician at Fort Drum.

How it all started

Mrs Chand never thought she would join the U.S. army. When the opportunity came, her husband, Amish Prasad supported the idea to take up the new challenge.

“My father, Dalip Chand, currently in Labasa served more than 20 years as a soldier with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces,” Ms Chand said.

“I never dreamt of becoming a soldier because I have not seen an Indo-Fijian female from Labasa.”

She recalled that training wasn’t easy, but by God’s grace and her family support she defied all odds.

“It’s never too late to start anything. Don’t be ruled by society or anyone’s perception of what you are and what you should be,” she said.

“I would especially like to say that we shouldn’t underestimate anyone because everyone is capable of something great.”

Her aim is to be the best finance soldier, and to complete her masters.
