Suva lawyer Vijay Maharaj confirmed to the Fiji Sun yesterday that former Fijian Electoral Commission Chairperson Suresh Chandra is no longer his partner nor his associate.

The two lawyers were previously partners for MC lawyers in Mark Street which Mr Chandra joined in 1993, however they allegedly parted ways recently due to trust account issues.

Mr Maharaj now operates his own law firm called Vijay Maharaj Lawyers.

There are allegations that Mr Chandra does not have a legal practicing certificate and thus could not continue as Chairperson.

A representative at the Legal Practitioners Unit confirmed this to the Fiji Sun at their office but attempts to get comments from Chief Registrar Yohan Liyanage were unsuccessful.

Mr Chandra remains tight lipped about the reasons for his resignation months away from the 2022 General Election.

He said he had informed the President of the same and his last day of work was on Saturday.
