Political leaders Savenaca Narube and Mahendra Chaudhry do not agree with the recommendations by the World Bank.

The World Bank report’s advice to cushion impacts of the crisis in Fiji include:

  •  Removing zero-rated VAT on essential items and raising VAT up from nine to 15 per cent and reducing the income threshold from $30,000 to $16,000.
  •  To offset this, there should be an increase in the contribution of the Poverty Benefit Scheme.
  •  It also suggested reforms to be carried out on both government revenues and expenditures - civil servants’ pay review/cut is also listed.

Unity Fiji leader, and former Reserve Bank of Fiji Governor, Mr Narube, said he did not subscribe to this approach.
