Moturiki Island Chief yesterday praised the Government for hearing their cries and ensuring that their women have access to a safe market.

Na Turaga na Ratu, Ratu Waisele Draunidalo, said it would be a game changer for them.

This was after Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony of the new $2.6million Levuka market.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said Levuka market vendors would not pay any stall fee for one year after the market is opened.

This message was welcomed by the women of Moturiki and Ovalau who are vendors of the Levuka market.

The new market is a double-storey building. It will have accommodation and stalls for more than 300 vendors.

It is built at the same location of the old market and is expected to open in December.

“I am so grateful to the Government for never forgetting us and ensuring that our women are able to sell from a safe space. An environment that ensures us that they are safe,” Ratu Waisele said.

Acting Prime Minister Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said though the project would take a little bit longer, the government has ensured that it would be a building that could withstand the changing weather patterns caused by climate change.
