The third plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China released a communique outlining the broad direction for China's economic development. The meeting attracted attention from economists and experts around the globe.

Last month CGTN presented a special program to explore opinions and insights from the Pacific.

Experts included Dr Joseph Veramu an economist and consultant for the Fiji National University and Dr Michael Yang the secretary-general South

Pacific Islands Institute of Asian Studies.

The institutional opening up of China presents new opportunities for the Pacific.

David Mahon, Executive Chairman, Mahon China Investment Management said “the opening up” was something that needed to be said.

A message reiterating for a very long time that it is open to investments and to also recorrect a misperception of China.

But he said it needs to be clear as to what sectors are open to foreigners.

Pacific island countries have collectively experienced increase in investments over the past 20 years from China.

“Oddly enough in a region mostly ignored by the US,” Dr Mahon said.
