The future of China–Fiji relations remains strong and promising, with both nations continuing to share common development priorities and a deepening commitment to bilateral cooperation.

Suva City Council (SCC) acting chief executive officer Tevita Boseiwaqa highlighted this during a recent engagement with a Chinese delegation.

Expressing appreciation for China’s long-standing support, Mr Boseiwaqa said contributions in infrastructure, business development, and investment platforms have played a significant role in strengthening Fiji’s economy.

“I love China and I appreciate what China has done for Fiji through our bilateral relations,” he said.

“China has helped grow our economy, especially in infrastructure and business. Many Chinese-owned businesses now serve our communities while also contributing to national revenue through exports.”

Mr Boseiwaqa noted that China’s willingness to support small nations like Fiji demonstrates its commitment to genuine partnership.

“Normally, when you are big and strong, you forget the smaller ones, but not China,” he said.

He emphasised that Fiji’s local governments, including the SCC, play a crucial role in ensuring that bilateral agreements and frameworks are implemented effectively.

A multi-level approach involving both national and municipal authorities is essential for strengthening cooperation.

There is also potential to expand sister-city relations between Suva and cities in China, creating more exchange programmes and joint initiatives that will benefit both sides.

Discussing China’s Global Development Initiative, Mr Boseiwaqa noted that it aligns closely with Fiji’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Both focus on similar priorities: ending poverty, supporting peaceful societies, and building sustainable communities.

“Because of these commonalities, there should be no major challenges in future cooperation,” he said.

This alignment also supports the region’s long-term vision under the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, providing potential pathways for future development partnerships.

“This is about making Fiji a better Fiji and contributing to a better world,” Mr Boseiwaqa said.
