Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian’s three-day visits to Taveuni in the Northern Division this week has brought great relief to the people.

Mr Zhou visited the Chinese community, gave some stationeries and gifts to Somosomo District School and donated over 40 solar streetlights worth $82,000 to Somosomo Village.

Taveuni District Officer Apisai Vularaka said it was the first time Mr Zhou visited the Garden Island.

The purpose of his visit was to attend Fiji’s President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu’s traditional vakasenuqanuqa celebration.

“Apart from his purpose of visit he made an effort to reach out to villagers, students, teachers and the Chinese community on the island,” Mr Vularaka said.

Mr Zhou extended warm greetings and best wishes to the Chinese community in Taveuni.

Keeping in mind that this year marks the 50th anniversary of China-Fiji diplomatic relations and the 170th anniversary of Chinese arrival in Fiji, Mr Zhou encouraged the Chinese community to carry forward the enterprising spirit of the Chinese nation and write new chapters of the Chinese communites contributions to Fiji.

Once an English teacher some 30 years ago, he felt at home among students at Somosomo District School and encouraged them to study hard and stay in Fiji to build the nation.

“Students hold the future of the nation and China will continue to provide scholarships for Fijian students to receive top-notch education in its modern universities,” Mr Zhou told students.

The donation of 40 solar streetlights was the latest reflection of China’s commitment to supporting Fiji in rural revitalisation, climate actions and independent development.

He concluded his visit on Wednesday.
