Fijians now have the chance to receive free medical services from the Chinese naval hospital ship, Ark Silk Road, which berthed at the Port of Suva this morning.
The massive white vessel sailed thousands of kilometers across the Pacific Ocean before reaching Fiji, bringing with its specialist doctors, nurses, and state of the art medical facilities.
At the welcoming ceremony, Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Chief of Staff Brigadier-General Sapenafa Motufaga thanked the Chinese government and crew members for their goodwill mission.

“Your presence in Fiji today and the health services you will be offering to our people, continues to strengthen the relationship between the People’s Republic of China and Fiji,” Brigadier-General Motufaga said.
Fijians can expect not only medical treatment, but also friendship and goodwill during the ship’s seven-day visit.
Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, encouraged locals to make the most of the opportunity.
“The ship will be here for about seven days. Free medical services will be provided, and people can check our notices on social media for service times,” Mr Zhou said.
All patients will first register at the Vodafone Arena in Laucala Bay, Suva before being transported to the ship for check-ups, consultations and even operations. Commander Senior Captain Peng Guliang, who leads the Ark Silk Road mission, said the visit symbolises the deep ties between China and Fiji.
“This year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Fiji. Let the whistle of the Ark Silk Road serve as a clarion call for us to safeguard life and promote peace together,” Captain Peng said.
The Ark Silk Road is on its second leg of a voyage through the South Pacific and Latin America. Besides providing medical care, the crew will also take part in cultural exchanges and community activities during their stay. For many Fijians, the visit offers a rare chance to access treatments not readily available locally. Free medical services begin tomorrow.
