The Pacific Conference of Churches (PCC) is concerned with the statement made by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka regarding Japan’s planned discharge of ‘treated water’ from its Fukushima nuclear plant.

Prime Minister Rabuka, last Thursday, released a video statement where he expressed his support of the expert advice of Japan’s planned discharge of more than a million tonnes of ‘treated water’ from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean.

Mr Rabuka said he was satisfied, after reading the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report, that Japan had demonstrated commitment to satisfy the wishes of Pacific Island states in regard to its plans to discharge waste water from the Fukushima Nuclear Plant to the Pacific Ocean.

Mr Rabuka had met with representatives from the Japanese Embassy prior to the video statement last week.
