Churches are playing a critical frontline role in supporting government efforts to combat the drug crisis in Fiji, the Minister for Policing and Communications, Ioane Naivalurua, says.
Mr Naivalurua made the remarks this week during a visit to the senior pastor of Church Abundance, Jone Nacanieli, at his residence in Tuirara, as part of ongoing engagement with church leaders nationwide.
He said churches are uniquely placed to shape values, guide young people, strengthen families and communities, and support prevention, awareness and rehabilitation efforts linked to drug abuse.

“Churches provide moral leadership, hope and positive life choices, which are essential in protecting our young people from drugs,” Mr Naivalurua said.
He commended the leadership of Church Abundance for its contribution to nation-building and urged continued collaboration between churches and law enforcement agencies to strengthen community-based responses to drug abuse.
Mr Naivalurua emphasised that the drug fight cannot be won by enforcement alone and requires a united approach, with churches, communities and government working together to safeguard Fiji’s future generations.
He was accompanied by Senior Superintendent of Police Mesake Sovasova, Assistant Commissioner of Police for Community Policing and Special Projects Livai Driu, Force Chaplain Joeli Mawi, and Inspector Usaia Donu.
