It was a close call for Tomasi Qalivalu and his family when flood waters almost inundated his home after the heavy rains on Saturday night.

The 42-year-old from Qaributa Settlement, Navua, while speaking to the Fiji Sun yesterday, said they were lucky that the floodwaters had not reached inside his house.

"In between 9:30 pm to midnight there were heavy rain and that is when the water started coming into the settlement," Mr Qalivalu said.

"Floodwaters had reached the top steps of of my house so if the rain had continued for some more time, we would have had to evacuate the house at midnight."

Another resident, Josefata Taqiri, said his mother, who also lived in the settlement, had to shift to his house at night after her home was flooded.

“This area often gets flooded because of the nearby river, which overflows during times of heavy rain,” Mr Taqiri said.
