The urgent meeting between Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and the Commission of Inquiry (COI) is yet to be established.

COI Counsel Assisting Janet Mason pointed out the importance of this meeting with Mr Rabuka with the inquiry approaching conclusion.

On Thursday, the COI had sent an email to Mr Rabuka requesting a meeting to discuss the contentious appointment of Barbara Malimali as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

The COI was formed last October to evaluate whether the process for appointing FICAC Commissioner Malimali was executed with integrity, fairness, and transparency, in compliance with legal standards.

Ms Mason said: “A further legal opinion from the COI, along with a review of the opinion by Professor Philip Joseph KC was sent to the PM and President early this week in relation to the appointment, dismissal and suspension provisions in the FICAC Act.”

She added: “The contents of this opinion will be the subject of the meeting which the COI has sought with the Prime Minister.”

The COI is set to conclude on Monday, marking the end of its eighth week of inquiry; the inquiry was originally planned to last for two weeks.
