The Ministry of Health & Medical Services has advised the public to refrain from entering Colo-i-Suva Forest Park and swimming in the forest pools until further notice due to the risk of leptospirosis.

The advisory follows recent cases, with one confirmed death and two suspected cases currently under investigation at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.

The ministry warned that after heavy rainfall, river and pool waters may be contaminated and unsafe.

Symptoms of leptospirosis include:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle pain
  • Red eyes
  • Vomiting
  • Yellowing of the eyes or skin

Members of the public are urged to seek early screening and prompt treatment at the nearest health facility if they feel unwell.

“Early treatment saves lives,” the ministry stated.
