Blatant disregard of road rules and poor driving behaviour are fuelling a surge in fatal crashes nationwide, Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has warned, as Fiji records a 73 per cent increase in road deaths compared with the same period last year.
The national target was to reduce accidents by 30 per cent — a goal that has failed to materialise.
The Western Division leads with 12 fatalities, followed by the North with 5, the South with 4, the Eastern Division with 3, and the Central Division with 2.
Victims include nine pedestrians, nine drivers and eight passengers.
“This is unfortunate that despite numerous awareness conducted by road safety stakeholders, we continue to record accidents and fatalities,” Mr Tudravu said.
He said the statistics reflect “poor and bad driving behavior and blatant disregard of road rules.”
“Attitude and mindset must change if we are to save lives and I ask that we change now for a safe festive season for all,” he said.
