Community Women Reach Out To Widows To Offer Diwali Help

Elenoa Luveni was one of the few women in her community who reached out to widows who needed help to clean up in preparation for Diwali Celebration.
As a widow herself, she had been working with the youth groups and women in her community of Savunawai Housing in Nadi in community work.
Hailing from Ono-i-Lau, the mother of two said it was one of the initiatives of their community to reach out to widows and elderly citizens.

“We helped them in whatever way we could. If they need a clean up in their compound, we help out.”
“It is important to serve all our neighbours who need help. In this community we worked together as a family despite the different ethnic and religious groups in our area.”
She said there were a few widows in her community who decided to help clean up compounds in preparing for Diwali celebration.
“I visited a Hindu widow, Ms Sushil Prasad who needed help in preparing for the Diwali celebration,” she said.
Ms Luveni said most of her Indo-Fijian friends in her community had planned that this year they would celebrate Diwali within their community rather than inviting people from outside.
“We have a strong bond here and we are planning to celebrate Diwali with our Indo-Fijian friends this year.”
Furthermore she said the community members have worked together with Police in setting up checkpoints around their area.
“We worked together to safeguard our community,” she said.
