Growing cases of violence against vulnerable groups, particularly in the Northern Division, have raised concern for the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection.

Minister Sashi Kiran said the Government was working to strengthen protection systems for women, children and older persons, while also developing prevention policies on violence against children.

She said cases reported from around the country — especially in the Northern Division — were alarming.

“Very concerning from around the country, especially for the North as well. We have seen very bad cases of violence against older persons,” Ms Kiran said.

She said the ministry was also encouraging more women to take up leadership roles in their communities.

Ms Kiran noted that Vanua Levu recorded higher cases partly because of the remoteness of some communities.

“The growing number of drugs and HIV issues are not just health issues. These are our issues as well,” she said.

She said drug use and HIV were not only health challenges but also social protection concerns.

“The most vulnerable are affected, and those living with HIV and struggling with addiction are also a social protection challenge for us,” she said.

Ms Kiran said discussions on a national ageing policy would take place later this month to gather ideas and solutions, particularly on improving care for older persons in communities.

“Are they possible, just like we are building aged care homes? Can we build similar support systems within villages so communities can care for older persons,” she said.

She urged the public to contribute their views to help shape the national ageing policy and upcoming prevention initiatives.

“Most importantly, we hope to continue hearing your voices in the plans and policies we are making to ensure they are relevant to the Northern Division and the different geographical challenges you face,” she said.
