Minister for Finance Biman Prasad has described the growing problem of informal settlements emerging in major cities, towns, and business districts as an issue that is expanding.

Mr Prasad highlighted this while responding to Opposition Member of Parliament Alipate Tuicolo, yesterday.

Mr Tuicolo was asking about the utilisation of the $2 million allocated for public-private partnerships for housing in the current financial year.

Mr Prasad revealed that around $859,000 was used under this allocation.

“Over the years, the increase in informal settlements has just continued, it hasn’t gone down in any way,” Mr Prasad said.

“The problem is getting bigger and bigger. So as a Government, our vision is to look at the next 10 years and ensure we provide affordable housing.”

Mr Prasad said this also included making more land available and providing a mechanism that would increase the supply of houses for those in informal settlements.
