Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) enforcement team will be checking retail outlets and supermarkets, to verify that extended hours don't lead to extended prices.

This will be conducted by checking price tags, scanning accuracy, and stock quality, FCC said in a media statement.

"Our officers have conducted 90 night inspections and 4 surveillances and monitoring nationwide, with 4 breaches noted, and 9 health and food safety matters referred to the respective municipal health inspectors."

"As retailers extend their opening hours and the night-time economy ramps up, we know that many consumers are squeezing in their shopping and maritime travels later into the night.

"That is why our enforcement officers have been placed on rotating night shifts this festive season to ensure that consumer protection doesn't end at 5 PM."

FCCC enforcement team will also monitor jetties and ports to ensure those providing shipping services do not take advantage of travelers during peak travel period.

"Issues noted have to do with overloading and officers are checking to ensure that shipping service providers are not overcharging on the regulated fares, cargo, and freight charges.

"Whether you’re buying groceries at midnight or boarding a ferry at dawn, our goal is to ensure you are treated fairly."
