Be careful with online financial transactions, the central bank has warned.
Reserve Bank of Fiji Governor, Ariff Ali, was responding to queries about an 'EbayShop Online Recruitment' platform that was operating in the country.
Hundreds of Fijians including those in the working class claimed to have gained from the platform, which is not associated with the registered original American eBay operators.
Vodafone Fiji urged its customers to maintain vigilance over evolving forms of fraud and exercise caution when engaging in financial online promotions.
In a statement last night, Vodafone Fiji distanced itself from the EbayShop Online Recruitment, or any cryptocurrency investment schemes.
“These fraudulent schemes often disguise themselves as legitimate investment and job opportunities or business ventures, luring individuals with enticing promotions and promises of high returns,” Vodafone said in a statement.
“Consumers need to remain vigilant about such schemes and exercise caution to safeguard their hard-earned money and financial well-being.”
The Consumer Council of Fiji has labelled the platform as a scam.
The council received numerous queries about the authenticity of this recruitment, prompting an extensive investigation.
Its chief executive officer, Seema Shandil, said such schemes ultimately collapsed, causing a vast majority of participants to lose money.
“No legitimate recruiter will ever ask individuals to pay money upfront in order to secure orders. Furthermore, online shopping platforms such as Amazon, eBay, Alibaba, etc, do not re-route their transactions to a third-party website for processing,” Ms Shandil said.
Upon conducting thorough investigations, the council received verifications of no association from eBay (the genuine online shopping site), she said.
