The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has clarified that the use of force on five inmates at the Lautoka Correctional Institution was in accordance with established procedures.
Reports had circulated on social media about allegations that five inmates were allegedly assaulted by officers last Thursday.
Investigation carried out by the FCS Commissioner, Jalesi Nakarawa confirmed that minimum force was applied by corrections officers to compel obedience from five inmates who had refused to comply with a routine search.

“The use of force was strictly in accordance with established procedures and aimed at maintaining safety and security within the facility,” FCS said in a statement yesterday.
“The five inmates involved were promptly medically examined following the incident. The medical reports confirm that there were no injuries sustained apart from minor scratches.”
They have reiterated that they are committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment for inmates and staff, in line with the principles of humane corrections and rehabilitation.
“The officers concerned will be dealt with internally in accordance with FCS policies to ensure adherence to professional standard,” FCS said.
“We would like to inform the public that the safety, dignity, and rights of all inmates remain top priority.”
The FCS is encouraging the public to seek verified information directly from the FCS to avoid the spread of misinformation.
