The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has rejected social media claims that inmates were injured or improperly treated during a recent search operation at the Maximum Correctional Centre, saying the allegations are false and misleading.

The clarification follows planned snap searches conducted on June 1 and 2 in C Wing of the Maximum Correctional Centre as part of efforts to maintain security and prevent the possession of contraband.

During the operation, inmate MX Vilikesa Delana was allegedly found with a mobile phone, batteries and a charger, while inmate MX Isaia Bobo was allegedly found with suspected contraband concealed inside a bar of washing soap.

The FCS said both matters are now subject to internal investigations and disciplinary processes.

A separate incident occurred on June 2 during a follow-up search operation when inmate MX Usaia Kilaiverata allegedly became verbally abusive towards correction officers after approaching the Officer in Charge regarding a personal request.

The FCS said the inmate continued his disruptive behaviour after being told to wait and later physically resisted officers and attempted to assault a correctional officer.

“Correctional officers responded using only the necessary and reasonable force required to safely restrain the inmate and restore order within the facility,” the FCS said.

The inmate was subsequently placed in segregation in accordance with established correctional procedures.

The FCS categorically denied social media allegations that MX Kilaiverata, MX Delana or MX Bobo were injured during the operation or placed in segregation without clothing.

“Following the incident, MX Usaia Kilaiverata was examined by the Senior Medical Officer, Dr Orisi, and attending nursing staff. The medical assessment confirmed that he had sustained no injuries and was medically cleared.”

The service also confirmed that no injuries were reported among correction officers or other inmates during the operation.

“Furthermore, allegations that inmates were placed in a ‘dark cell’ without clothing are entirely false,” the statement said.

“All inmates placed in segregation are managed in accordance with established policies, operational procedures, and applicable standards governing inmate welfare, safety, and security.”

The FCS urged members of the public to avoid sharing unverified information and to rely on official communications for accurate updates.

“Members of the public are encouraged to refrain from sharing unverified information and to rely on official Fiji Corrections Service communications for accurate and factual updates as these men have families.”

Investigations into the alleged contraband discoveries are continuing.
