“We have been caring for our granddaughter for a while now and we always feel bad when she struggles to study at night,” she said.
“She studies at night when everything is peaceful and quiet and with the solar system, we are at ease knowing we do not have to worry about the lights.”
Their granddaughter currently studies at Rotuma High School.
Additionally, villagers that have the Government-supplied solar system were officially handed the ownership rights for it two weeks ago.
This was possible through the Rights, Empowerment and Cohesion (REACH) project – an initiative by the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation and the United Nations Development Programme,
The initiative is funded by the Government of Japan.
Pepjei district chief, Gagaj Suakamaas: “This kind of help by the Government shows that we are not forgotten. It shows that we are still part of the development works by them.”
