A senior official at the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) has been remanded by the Nadi Magistrate Court on alleged drug charges.

The accused, Osea Raicama Dakai, appeared before Magistrate Merata Tikoisuva yesterday, charged with one count each of unlawful importation of illicit drugs and breach of secrecy oath under the FRCS Act 1998.

He allegedly disclosed confidential information received during the performance of his duties.

The court heard that the accused was allegedly involved in the importation of 4.8 kilograms of methamphetamine, which was seized at Nadi International Airport two weeks ago.

The accused was represented by lawyer Simione Valenitabua, while Sergeant Siteri Naika appeared for the Police prosecution.

Mr Valenitabua applied for name suppression for his client, but Sergeant Naika objected, stating that the matter was serious and of public interest.

She also opposed bail and requested that the case be transferred to the Lautoka High Court.

She further stated that the accused was part of a group linked to the Nadi drug bust, in which co-accused individuals have already been remanded and their cases transferred to the High Court.

Magistrate Tikoisuva denied bail and adjourned the matter to June 2 at the Lautoka High Court.
