About 300 school teachers affected by Tropical Cyclone Harold will be able to access the Natural Disaster Relief fund assistance by the Fijian Teachers Association (FTA) from today.

A statement released by the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) yesterday revealed that about 60 schools, including teachers quarters, were forecasted to have sustained severe or partial damages from Severe Tropical Cyclone Harold.

FTA general secretary Paula Manumanunitoga said the Fijian Teachers Association was concerned about the welfare of its members and teachers who had been severely affected by TC Harold in the past week.

Mr Manumanunitoga said members of the association were eligible to receive $500 a year as part of its Natural Disaster Relief Fund.

He said the assistance are for their members in Kadavu, Vatulele, Beqa, Southern Lau, Tailevu and those affected by flooding in the Western parts of Viti Levu.

“We have met and approved that there would be an amount of money that would be released to assist our member Teachers and their families through our FTA Welfare fund,” Mr Manumanunitoga said.

“The money would be sufficient to buy relief supplies, necessities for one whole month.

“At the moment we are yet to confirm the exact figures. We have engaged with NDMO and they will be sending us a detailed number of teachers together with their assessment report soon.”

Mr Manumanunitoga said they had alerted teachers in the affected areas of the assistance and there were procedures for them to take.

“We only ask our members to take pictures to show us as evidence that they have been affected.

“These pictures need to be verified by the turaga ni koro (village headman) and they can send that, we will process and we will direct the funds into their accounts.”

He added the association was also accepting donations in cash or kind this week at their Headquarters that would also be distributed to its members affected in the maritime islands.
