It was on Tuesday, when Shri Chand and his wife, Aruna were preparing to celebrate Diwali at their daughter’s home in Field 40, Lautoka.

However, the situation took a turn when they were confronted with the news that their only daughter had tragically died in a car accident in Teidamu.

She was returning from visiting her in-laws in Ba after delivering Diwali sweets she made for them.

Mr Chand could not contain his emotions yesterday when sharing memories of his late 38-year-old daughter, Arishma Ashika Devi.

The mother of three children was the only girl, among three brothers.

Initial Findings

Chief Operations Officer, ACP Abdul Khan said it was alleged that Ms Devi was on her way to Lautoka from Ba with her seven-month-old baby where she allegedly fell asleep resulting in the vehicle veering off the road.

“On Saturday, we had a family prayer the whole day, she was here,” Mr Chand said.

“According to her husband, they were cooking all night on Monday and they were awake late. They went the next morning (day of alleged accident) at 6am to meet her mother-in-law and father-in-law.

“They spent about two hours and returned.

“My daughter was driving the car, the baby was in the back and her husband was a few metres behind driving his taxi.”

Her son, seven-month-old Krishan Chand-Sharma was the youngest of her three children.

He said his son-in-law drove the family up that morning.

“I last spoke with her on Saturday, most of the time we were busy with the prayers at home and she told me that she would return home and begin making sweets for the family,” he said.

He said his daughter was a qualified nurse and later on resigned to become a lecturer for training nurses.

Mr Chand added that her human nature was different from others, she was very bold and a straight forward person.

Ms Devi’s funeral will be held on Saturday at Namoli, Ba where she will later be cremated at the Namoli Crematorium.
