Dad’s handywork motivates tile layer daughter

Aspiring to thrive in a male-dominated field will soon be a reality for Ruci Vukialau.
Following her graduation on Wednesday at the Fiji National University, Nasinu; Ms Vukialau, 19, with her Certificate III in Wall and Floor Tiling could be landing a job soon. She completed 12 weeks of training with the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC).
Her dream to be a tile layer was sparked while watching her father repair and upgrade their home.

She acknowledged that the training was challenging, especially as most of her classmates were men.
“There were times I found it hard to express myself in class, often choosing to remain silent while working alongside them,” Ms Vukialau said.
“But I had a dream to succeed and advance in the workforce. It was exhausting at times, but I had a supportive group encouraging me to continue my studies. Clinging to my faith kept me motivated to complete the course.”
As she prepares to face the realities of the field, Ruci recognises the demands of long hours and constant availability, which can pose challenges for those juggling family and personal commitments.
