Residents living along one of Lautoka’s busiest roads, Vomo St, are in fear of their safety as several street lights in the area have not been working for months.
Many streets in Lautoka are facing similar issues, with street lights malfunctioning, and residents are unsure who to approach to resolve the problem.
A resident, Peni Nabainivalu, said: “I didn’t know whom to complain to about this matter.

“The lights haven’t been working for almost one year now. It is a matter of safety for the people around here, especially the old gang,” Mr Nabainivalu said.
He said drunk individuals often roam and gather under the trees, and residents are unsure of how to contact the relevant authorities, such as the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), to address the streetlight issue.
The absence of proper lighting has led to incidents of harassment, with young boys reportedly lurking in the shadows of the darkened streets, he claims.
In a recent incident, Mr Nabainivalu’s brother-in-law had his vehicle vandalised, with its back window smashed while it was parked.
Another resident, Rajesh Lata, echoed similar concerns.
She shared that while she had reached out to the Lautoka City Council, she was directed to complain to the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA).
“I contacted the Lautoka City Council and they told me that I should complain to FRA, but I don’t know how to. People come and sit under the trees across from my home during the night. I don’t know why only a section of the streetlights in front of my house isn’t working,” she said.
“This is a busy road, and people are constantly moving. We never know what can happen. I’m scared that someone can take advantage of the darkness and try breaking into my home.”
As street lighting is an essential aspect of urban safety, the residents hope that increased attention will be given to ensure their streets are well-lit and secure.
Queries sent to FRA have yet to be answered.
