Dead Fish in Nasekula Creek, Labasa
Ms Baleicakau said they were cautious in ruling out what may have caused the mysterious floating dead fish that remains unsolved two years later.

Investigations are ongoing to determine what killed the fish at Nasekula Creek in Labasa over the past two weeks.
This is not the first time dead fish floating in the creek have been discovered.
The same happened in October 2022.

The creek is adjacent to the industrial facilities; this is where the majority of Labasa’s hardware, company showrooms, and bus companies are located.
The Department of Environment acting director, Senimili Baleicakau, confirmed receiving a complaint last year.
“Assessments were undertaken, but we’re still investigating the matter,” Ms Baleicakau said.

“But as of the incident that occurred over the past two weeks, it wasn’t brought to our attention.
“We do reach out to the public and communities on certain complaints; please contact the department; we have an office here in Labasa.”
Ms Baleicakau said they were cautious in ruling out what may have caused the mysterious floating dead fish that remains unsolved two years later.
The area is industrial, and she added that anything could be a source of toxicity that killed the fish.
“There could be several factors,” Ms Baleicakau said.
