Denuga Redefines Success on Her Own Terms

Life often presents unexpected turns, and for 53-year-old Medrina Denuga, that meant embracing a new path.
As a single mother of a 23-year-old son, she has never been one to shy away from challenges to redefine success on her own terms.
Denuga was part of the 17 students enrolled in Fiji National University’s (FNU) Community Alternative Pathway Programme’s Domestic Electrical Installation short course in the Republic of Nauru.

“I am just a single mother, and I am 53 years old. I want to be an inspiration to my son and show that there is no age to learning new things,” Denuga said.
“I am employed as a Social Case Worker for the Nauru Regional Processing Centre (RPC), and it was time for me to move on, and find something that interests me.”
The determined Denuga is grateful to FNU and the Republic of Nauru’s Department of Multicultural Affairs (DMA) to have given her this opportunity.
“The Community Alternative Pathways programme is a great initiative in Nauru, it allows us to choose something different from our current jobs.”
“We do have other vocational centres, but these short courses were offered for free, and I am appreciative towards DMA and FNU for having this course for free for the students of Nauru, giving us a second chance and options to choose from.”
Her decision to enrol in a plumbing course marked a significant shift in her life.
“There were only three female students taking this course, and to be the oldest made it very different for me- it was very exciting!”
“This short course was very good, the trainers were very supportive; the lessons were very simple to understand, and I am glad to have had this opportunity.”
