COOK TURNED LOGGER... Jai Chand Sharma.

For the last time in their 27 years of marriage, Jai Chand Sharma shared a cup of tea with his wife, Sherin Lata, before going to work on Monday.

Mr Sharma died after a tree allegedly fell on him at Wadawada Settlement, Nayarabale.

He was working for Valebasoga Tropik Board Limited.

A distraught Ms Lata recounted how she received a call from the company’s Human Resources officer informing her to go to the Labasa Hospital because her husband was very sick.

“I rushed to hospital but it was too late. He was already wrapped in a white cotton cloth,” she said.

“My husband worked for VTBL as a cook for 15 years until last month, the company advised him to work at the logging site,” she said.

“His job was to carry the logs and arrange in the order for collection.”

The 46-year-old tailor said her husband was 49 years old.

“I didn’t realise that the cup of tea we shared would be the last time,” she said.

“He was a very friendly person who used to help me with the house chores.

“My husband was very supportive towards our children’s education.

“I still cannot believe he is no more.”

The family had plans to move to Suva by the end of the year.

When contacted yesterday, a company representative declined to comment as investigations were underway.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the investigations and said the post-mortem would be conducted soon.

Mr Chand is survived his wife and three children.
