A Lautoka family’s expectation to celebrate Diwali with all their loved ones turned tragic when a 36-year old woman died following a motor vehicle accident at Teidamu Hill along the Kings Road near Lautoka yesterday.

According to Police, the victim was travelling from Ba to Lautoka with her seven-month-old baby. It is allegedly she fell asleep which resulted in the vehicle veering off the road and hitting an electric post (pictured).

The victim is believed to have died as a result of the impact.

Chief Operations Officer, ACP Abdul Khan, confirmed that the accident took place at around 9am.

ACP Khan said driver fatigue was believed to be the cause of the unfortunate accident based on initial information gathered from the victim’s relatives.

“The victim’s baby was discharged with nil injuries as investigations continue,” he said.

ACP Khan has urged drivers to ensure they get adequate rest as driver fatigue is a serious safety concern not only for the driver and their passenger(s) but to other road users.

When approached for a comment yesterday, the father of the victim kindly declined to make any comments on the accident as the family was still in shock.
